Small wind turbines in the UK: an honest take

Tempting, romantic, and usually the wrong answer — with exceptions.

The honest answer most sellers won't give: for the average garden, a small wind turbine underperforms badly. Rated outputs ("400W!") assume steady 12m/s wind; a typical sheltered garden averages 3–5m/s, where the same turbine makes 10–40W. Turbulence from buildings and trees makes it worse, and bearings wear out.

When wind *does* make sense:

If you're considering it, put an anemometer up for a month first — £25 of measurement beats £400 of disappointment. For most people, that wind-turbine budget buys more useful energy as an extra panel and a bigger battery.
